About this Site
I created this website as an assignment for the Introduction to Digital History course at Northern Virginia Community College in the summer of 2017. In considering a topic for my class project, I remembered my mother's old college notebook from a home economics class she took around 1948--her assignment was to collect information about the the kinds of appliances available for a modern home. That piqued my interest in what appliances were like in earlier decades. I can just barely recall the old wringer washer on my grandmother's back porch, and I had no idea how it worked until I started this study. I am interested in cultural history--how people lived in the past, the conditions of their lives, and how that differed from today.
